BREAK THE LINE by Allison Mullinax

Excerpt from Chapter 1

“What are you, the coast guard?” I ask, irritated with her demeanor.

“Game Warden’s daughter.” She winks, and I choke back, sputtering on the last drink. Game Wardens, Water Patrol, they all have the power to end my season with a reckless speed violation, not to mention cost me a ton in fines. She’s the only one who knows the reason we hit that log so hard is because we were traveling entirely too fast. Had we been going slower, we may have seen it breech the surface.

“Relax, angler,” she says, standing and stretching her arms above her head. She walks over to where I’m sitting and places her hands against the seat on either side of me. “But so help me God, if I ever see this sparkly-ass boat soaring down these waterways again, my daddy will be the least of your troubles.” She grabs the empty water bottle from my hands, and hops off the pontoon onto the pier. I watch her glide down the dock and into the crowd. When I lose sight of her auburn hair, I stand scratching my head. I turn back to Jess, who is within earshot of the tongue-lashing I just received, and shrug my shoulders at him.

“We gotta find a boatyard and get this thing fixed. You also owe me a beer. It’s not every day I make out with a man and bring him back to life,” he yells from the Bass Cat and wipes the sweat from his forehead, then pulls his phone out of his pocket. “Yeah, this is Jessie Stanton over here at Spring Creek dock... I need a towboat and a mechanic.” I listen to him trail off as he walks to the back of the boat, peering over at the motor.

I hop off the pontoon and slide my eyes over the faces in the crowd. A kind-faced woman and a small boy are perched on the bench underneath a pine tree.

“Excuse me, ma’am? My name is Benson Howell. Are you from this nice town?” I shake her hand.

“Benson Howell!” the boy shouts from behind his melting ice cream cone.

“Hi there.” I smile down at him, and his mom pats his thigh for him to quiet down.

“Yes, Mr. Howell, what can I help you with?” she asks.

“Please, just Benson.” I crouch down to my knees in front of the boy.

“You like fishin’?” I thump the bill of his oversized baseball cap.

“Yeah! My Uncle Larry takes me. I caught a four-pound bass last month all by myself. I’m gonna be a pro fisherman like you. Aren’t I, Mom?” the boy squeals excitedly.

“Four pounds.” I whistle, showing him that I’m impressed. “Keep it up, buddy.” He bounces on the bench seat, and the lady looks at me with appreciation.

“I hate to bother you, but can you tell me the name of the kind lady that owns this boat? I believe she is the Game Warden’s daughter.” I give her a half smile for good measure.

“Fiery red hair and an attitude to match?” she asks, shaking her head.

“Yes, ma’am, I believe that’s the one.” I laugh.

“That’d be Danni-Rose.” There’s a sad edge to her voice. I nod in appreciation before making my way back down to Jess.

“Jesus I’m hungry,” he says, meeting me halfway down the pier. “Let’s get a ride back to the hotel and find us a fine southern meal.” And as we make our way through the crowd and up

the shoreline, I can’t help but search for the fiery-haired girl with an attitude to match.
