Author Interview with Brittany Pate

Today we are chatting with Debut Author Brittany Pate. Let's learn a bit more about Brittany and her writing.

What are your writing plans for the future?

Well, I have a few different things I’m working on right now. The biggest one is a series I’m writing with another author. We’re deep in the editing trenches right now, but I’m very happy with how it’s turning out. The second is the first book in a trilogy, based in the same world where FIRE’S KISS took place.

Did you ever think you would be unable to finish your first novel?

Oh, lots of times. FIRE’S KISS took me so long to write because I was filled with doubt. I also wrote most of it while pregnant and working full-time, so it felt like a monumental task. I remember I wrote “The End” as I rocked my two-month-old in his bassinet with my foot while he stared at me.

When you were young, did you ever see writing as a career or full-time profession?

Always. From an early age, I knew what I wanted to do with my life.

Do you have a day job other than being a writer? And do you like it? Does your day job ever get in the way of your writing?

I do have a day job, although it isn’t full-time. I like it most of the time and I absolutely adore my co-workers. But it does get in the way of writing. That’s actually why I cut back the amount of time I spend at my day job.

Did any of your books get rejected by publishers?

Oh yes. Rejection and I were well-acquainted for my first novel.

Do you reply back to your fans and admirers personally?

Definitely. If someone can take time out of their day to let me know they liked my book, the very least I can do is thank them.

Do you believe attractive book covers help in its sales?

I know you aren’t supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I’ll admit I do. If a cover doesn’t intrigue or impress me in some way, I’m more likely to spend my money on something else.

What do you do in your free time?

I do a lot of reading. I enjoy knitting and have two attention-hogging cats. I’m also big on outside-the-house activities with my husband and son.

Do you need to be in a specific place or room to write, or you can just sit in the middle of a café full of people and write?

Honestly, it depends on my mood. If I’m really into the scene I’m writing, I can tune out everything else around me. If I’m struggling a little, it means I need to shut myself in the office and get rid of any distractions.

What is that dream goal you want to achieve before you die?

Before anything else, I want to be the best mother I possibly can. I want my son to grow into a good man, prepared to chase his own dreams. In the meantime, I’ll continue telling the stories that demand to be told.
