The Small Things
I used to really hate Valentine’s Day.
That may be strange coming from someone who writes romance novels, but I hated Valentine’s Day with a passion until I was 19. I had boyfriends on and off, but it always somehow worked out that I was alone on this particular holiday. That might have had something to do with my general dislike.
At 19, I was working as a cashier at a grocery store while going to college. I had specifically requested to work on Valentine’s Day, which wasn’t a problem because most everyone else requested the day off. I showed up for scheduled evening shift, much to the surprise of some of my male co-workers.
“What are you doing here?” I remember one of them asking. “I figured you’d be on a date.”
No, there were no dates for me, no special someone to spend the day with. There never had been. I explained this to my co-workers and told them that I always made a point to work, instead of sitting alone at home.
One by one, six of these sneaky, sweet guys went through different lines with a single long-stemmed, red rose. They then proceeded to present me with all six roses. It was, by far, the sweetest thing anyone had ever done for me on Valentine’s Day.
As fate would have it, I met the man who would eventually become my husband two months later and I’ve never spent another Valentine’s Day alone again. But I still remember those six young boys and their six beautiful roses. It was a wonderful reminder to appreciate the small things in life and that it really is the thought that counts.
