As a romance writer, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that love is a powerful emotion for me. It fuels me, drives me, and seeps into every word I type. I searched my whole life for it, ruthlessly casting aside any that didn’t ignite my soul; choosing solitude over settling when it came to love. That was, until one day, the inspiration for my writing started with three little words… “Dance with me.”
The first time I saw him I was bartending. A set of azure eyes situated beneath a mop of dark hair peered up from his empty glass. They stopped me in my tracks. I went to speak, to ask if he wanted another drink, but words remained trapped in my tongue.
“Is that Josh Hartnett?” my visiting friend leaned over the bar and asked. He certainly could have been. The chiseled jaw, tall stature, broad muscular shoulders… he had movie star written all over him. The rugged camouflage outfit was the only giveaway that this wasn’t some celebrity heartthrob hanging out in my small town.
When I finally found my tongue and managed to ask him if he needed a drink, he didn’t look up.
“Captain and Coke,” he said, his voice deep and sullen.
I took his glass and hurried to the drink station to fill it up again. Returning with a fresh drink, I set it down in front of him. He looked up… straight at me. Perhaps it was through me. The intensity in those ocean-filled eyes sent me stumbling backwards several steps. I reached out for support and bumped a rack of glasses sending several of them crashing to the floor. I cringed when the sound of glasses shattering echoed through the bar.
Smooth.
Mortified, I hurried to clean the glass up. When I finished, like a beautiful apparition, he was gone. Money to cover his drinks the only thing left in his place. If my friend hadn’t been there to confirm his existence, I would have thought I dreamed him up. Men that look like that, that make me feel like he just did with one look, don’t exist. Apparently, they do.
Over the next several months he would appear periodically at the bar. Each time, just like the last, he would brood over one Captain and Coke, order a second and disappear. Each time he came in, my usual manner of being confident, talkative, and generally coherent flew out the window. I turned into a bumbling, glass-breaking idiot. Every. Single. Time. My co-bartender and friend, Eddie, thought watching my total and utter descent into a Three Stooges movie was the greatest thing he had ever witnessed. After fifteen years of friendship, this was the first time he had ever seen me come undone because of a man.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” he laughed one night after another pathetic showing on my part.
“I don’t know! Every time he comes in here I lose my shit! What the hell?” I returned the laughter while I swept up the glassy remnants of another embarrassing episode.
The next night, Eddie was taking a break after the dinner rush sitting with a few of our regular customers. I leaned on the worn wooden bar talking to Eddie and the group as they sipped Old-Fashioneds. I heard the door behind me open. Eddie’s face lit up, a sinister smile tugged at his lips.
“You guys want to see something funny?” he asked them.
They responded with nods.
“Kate’s about to lose her shit.” He grinned wide and burst into the infectious laughter he’s famous for. It’s the kind that echoes through the room, drowning out any other sounds and causing everyone around him to join in.
My stomach dropped. This time I didn’t join Eddie’s laughter. I could feel the man behind me. It was too soon… he never came in this close together. I usually got a few weeks between embarrassing episodes. A groan was my response to the laughter surrounding me.
“Shut up, Eddie!” I growled, warning him with a glare.
He sat back in his chair and grinned, waiting for the now predictable show. With a deep breath I spun around. There he was… beautiful, brooding, and parked at my bar. I didn’t even ask him what he wanted, I just poured him a Captain and Coke.
Determined to redeem myself, I carried that drink like it was the most fragile thing on earth. I set it down in front of him, pleased I had made it this far without incident. I could feel the eyes of Eddie and his crew watching my every move… waiting for me to fall apart. I dug deep for the determination to prove them wrong.
“I’ll start you a tab,” I said. He nodded his response.
I stepped back like one would when dismantling a bomb. Several cautious steps later I was clear. I had done it. I spoke. I didn’t break anything. I didn’t make a complete ass of myself. Feeling fully vindicated I spun around to shoot Eddie my best “take that” look. My sweater caught the plastic edge of the glass rack during my triumphant twirl.
Crash.
Son of a… two more glasses down. The roar of laughter from Eddie and the three other men invested in my show ripped across the bar. If you can’t beat them, join them. My own laughter blended in. This was hopeless. I would forever be the bumbling idiot whenever this gorgeous creature came around.
He drank his two drinks and left, like usual. Eddie went home early. No need for two bartenders on such a slow night. Soon after he left, the bar cleared out leaving me alone on a cold March night. Preparing to close early just a bit after midnight, the door creaked open. I groaned realizing I would no longer be making an early exit.
My heart pounded when I saw who walked around the corner. It was him. He was back. He slid into his usual stool. I took a deep breath and made my way across the bar to land in front of him. We were alone, just the two of us.
“Captain and Coke?” I asked. I figured I should since he was out of his routine. He’d never been in this late before and perhaps he drank something else this time of the night.
“Yes, please.” He looked up at me.
It set me back on my heels. A nod and a grunt was his standard response. Eye contact was rare. Tonight, I got both. When I delivered his drink and set it down, the most peculiar thing happened. He started talking.
“How are you tonight?” he asked.
Those words shouldn’t have been a big deal, but considering he was essentially a mute before this moment, they were the strangest things I’d ever heard. I started talking. Words got easier as his demeanor softened. The dark shadow that seemed to follow him around dissipated and left behind a man who was actually warm and funny. It turned out he did have teeth, something I often wondered since I’d never seen him smile before tonight. When he flashed those pearly whites at me for the first time, I swear I could hear my own heart skip a beat.
We talked until bar close. The next night he showed up again, a smile greeting me when he walked through the door. Again, we sat and talked for hours. He divulged the fact he had been engaged, quite unhappily, until they broke it off last month, and it was the reason he came here and sat sullenly at the bar. He was in no mood for small talk… until now.
For the third night in a row, just after the bar cleared out, he appeared again. The feelings he evoked in me never faltered, though my ability to keep the glasses from shattering was improving. That night we talked again, a connection forming deep between us. I cursed the clock as it neared bar close, meaning our night had to end again.
He stayed while I started my closing procedures, keeping me company while I washed glasses and wiped the bar. I sat down to count my till. He stood up and walked across the dark bar to the jukebox. Running calculations through my head, I tallied the night’s earnings. A song started to play.
I looked up. There he stood with a hand extended.
“Dance with me.”
Those three words stopped my heart. He took my hand and pulled me into his arms. We melted together as we danced in the warm glow of the neon lights. When his lips touched mine for the first time, I knew my search was over. We married beneath the palm trees in Islamorada two years later.
He is my inspiration for every romance novel I write. Our love burns today just as deep as it did the day he pulled me into his arms. Parts of him find their way into every hero in my books. I write while he sleeps beside me at night, glancing over to look at him for inspiration when it falters. He is my walking, talking, real-life romance novel hero. Proof that what I write about is not just make-believe, it’s real and it’s possible. I’m grateful every day I waited for him, that I didn’t settle. Seven years ago, he asked me to dance, and we haven’t stopped dancing since.
