Interview with Editor Michelle Neblett

Today we are talking with Editor Michelle Neblett. We are so happy to sit down with Michelle and find out what she is looking for in submissions. We love our editors and hope you enjoy getting to know them!

How did you get into this business and why?

I lucked into it. I have always adored books and when asked to help with submissions, I jumped at the chance. What could be cooler than to have the first look at a book? Then, I auditioned for editing and loved it. Helping an author with their writing? So cool!

What do you look for when reading submissions?

I look for something new and different. I love fantasy, but lets have a surprise in there to mix it up. Like the hero isn’t always so nice, or the quest takes you somewhere you didn’t expect.

What can authors do to get you excited about working them?

Authors should be open to trying new things. Maybe the main character really is the horse in that western.

What is the best way for authors to reach out to you?

Reach me like where to submit? On the website, or email me HERE. Reach me like I loved the story? Be genuine- don’t force your work.

What are your pet peeves?

Oh my goodness! Starting sentences with ‘but’. But then again, sometimes you need it in natural speaking. But, mostly no. Arg.

What would you like to see in the form of submissions?

Mix up the genre lines. Western YA with werewolves. :-)

I really want something Heaven and Hell related.

What is on your to-be-read pile right now?

My TBR pile needs its own library. I have books on composting, roses, how to be your dog’s best friend, Heaven and Hell, Angels, and sewing. That’s one pile.

What are you currently reading?

23 minutes in Hell by Bill Wiese

Give us 5 facts about you that we may not know.

  1. I’m a mostly vegan (dairy sometimes)

  2. I’m terrified of mole crickets

  3. I was raised in Wisconsin.

  4. I once held a wild bluebird on my finger like Snow White.

  5. I moonlight as a Laboratory Scientist (I work third shift in a lab)

What is your favorite genre?

Science Fiction/Fantasy

What is your favorite type of hero and heroine?

I like heroes that show and own their flaws.
